| Mike
Zimmer, award-winning Chief Photographer for NBC6/WTVJ and Telemundo 51
presented best practices in lighting for television professionals
working in the field in a cutting edge seminar on Saturday morning,
October 14, 2006 to an audience of production company and TV station
photographers mixed in with a few students.
Mike emphasized that the changes in camera technology has diminished the need for typical lighting techniques. Today, less is often more. He offered two rules for working in television news. One, time management is key to success. Two, take control of each situation. The sun is a problem working outside in South Florida. The light is harsh with resulting dark shadows on the faces of your subjects. Learn to use scrims to defuse the light. Add a reflector to fill in the remaining shadow. Or use a HMI light. HMI lights are smaller than standard incandescent lights. They generate less heat and the color temperature of HMI lights is the same as average sunlight Ð 5,600 K. Indoors, or a night, the photographer has the opportunity for creativity in lighting. Mike spent a considerable amount of time in the seminar describing the creative options available to the working photographer. |
